Buckinghamshire’s rural heritage was celebrated in all its glory at the annual county show despite a few drops of rain.

And amongst the thousands of visitors were some special guests including the National Farmers Union president Meurig Raymond, Countryfile presenter Adam Henson, England cricket captain Alastair Cook fresh from his Ashes victory and Olympic bronze medallist Max Whitlock.

The weather forecast had changed throughout the week promising rain one day and sun the next, and it did make setting up the show a bit muddy, but on the day itself the sun shone for most of it.

Show chairman, Cublington pig farmer Andy Alexander said: “We’re farmers, we’re used to coping with the weather. Things get done whatever happens.”

Sixty cattle classes and over 30 sheep classes ensured a superb turnout of stock to admire the best in British farming, and both Mr Raymond and Mr Henson presented some of the cups during the Grand Parade in the main ring in the afternoon.

The equestrian rings saw some top quality horses competing in qualifying classes for the Horse of the Year Show.

And the countryside area, as always, was very popular with families as children took the chance to meet and play with the beagles and hounds from several hunts.

In the home and garden marquee magnificent specimens of flowers and vegetables were displayed alongside imaginative and excellent handiwork from the Womens Institute and the Young Farmers.

The cookery theatre, launched last year, was back but had moved to a new position up one of the aisles.

And the food hall was filled with local producers selling delicious goodies to eat on the spot or take home for later.

Hemel Hempstead born and bred Olympic gymnast Max Whitlock, 22, who won two bronze medals at the London 2012 Olympics, was on the Nissan stand and entertained visitors who watched him perform on his pommel horse.

He said: “Nissan sponsor me and I’m associated with the Aylesbury branch. Nissan is sponsoring Team GB at the Rio Olympics next year.”

The Bolddog Lings Stunt Team provided an incredible display of daring, bravery and exceptional talent and fitness as they stunned the crowd with two performances of their high flying acrobatics on motorbikes in the main ring.

At the end of the day show secretary Alison Baylis was delighted with the way the show had gone. She said: “I think the NFU president was a draw for the farmers, and it was fantastic that Adam Henson came too.”
