An Aylesbury housewife who appeared on Channel 4’s Countdown gameshow in the 80s is cycling 1,000 miles in the company of TV presenter Fern Britton.

Cath Powell, 57, of Bierton is tackling the gruelling cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End in May this year alongside Fern, who went to school with her sister, and 24 others.

The seasoned cyclist – who got through to the semi-final on an epsiode of the famous words and numbers show which was aired in 1988 – has taken part in other fundraising cycling events overseas with Fern, and is looking forward to saddling up with her again in Challenge 57.

The event is raising money for Professor Robert Winston’s Genesis Research Trust, a charity which is trying to develop treatment to prevent recurrent miscarriage and Fern is a patron of.

Cath, who lives with husband Jeff and is mum to Robert, 29, and Harry, 26, said: “I’ve chosen to do Challenge 57 because I am 57 and I was born in 1957, just like Fern.

“I realise how lucky I am to have two healthy children. Not everyone can.”

The team hope to complete the route in 21 days and aim to cover around 57 miles each day on average, but Cath says she is praying for good weather.
