Council tax increase of 1.95 per cent expected at AVDC
Councillors are this evening expected to set this year's council tax increase just shy of two per cent.
At a meeting of full council this evening we will learn how much tax will be increased by and Aylesbury Vale District Council says it has tried to keep it low in light of the economic situation.
The 1.95 per cent rise would mean that for a band D property residents will pay 131.07 for the AVDC portion of council tax.
Originally proposals were put forward for a 3.6 per cent increase but that was cut to 2.95 per cent and now it has been cut even further.
At the cabinet meeting where the budget was discussed a couple of weeks ago Neil Blake, cabinet member for resources, said: "We have revisited the comments made by scrutiny members and the general public and feel that we should, as a responsible council, do more to help the residents of the Vale in this almost unprecedented economic climate by giving further consideration to the level of council tax increase for the next financial year."
Warning of troubled times ahead he added: "Moving on to the year 2011/12 and beyond, these will be even more difficult years than the year under detailed review.
"We've identified in excess of 30 different areas of savings during this budget setting proce3ss which amount to nearly three quarters of a million pounds but we will now have to look very closely at our main areas of expenditure where we will have to identify new methods of working in order to obtain substantial efficiency savings in order to balance future budgets.
"No one expects that task to be easy, particularly as we expect any new national government to impose further restrictions on our grant income, but it is a challenge that has to be faced and met.
"Failure to find those savings is not an option and I have no doubt that, with the support of members, officers and staff we will rise to that challenge."
