A high-end restaurant with a nod to Aylesbury’s Great Train Robbery heritage is the plan for the old police station - but only if a developer is allowed to buy it.

Jonathan Gilpin, who previously developed the original Bucks Herald offices in Walton Terrace, wants to transform the old police station at the corner of Walton Street and Exchange Street.

But the site, which is owned by Bucks County Council is currently listed for demolition to make way for a temporary surface car park under the Waterside North plans.

Mr Gilpin, whose plan has attracted the full support of The Aylesbury Society is hoping the council may have a change of heart.

He said: “I think that the spot would be an ideal place for people who wanted to go a little bit more upmarket than the White Hart before or after the theatre.

“The old cells and their doors are still there, and it is where Ronnie Biggs was held after the Great Train Robbery, we wanted to make it into a bit of a feature.

“If the council don’t have a use for the site and are willing to let it go I would be willing to buy it and put it back to use.”

Mr Gilpin offered £750,000 for the site in 2013, but it was sold to Bucks County Council by Thames Valley Police Authority. Part of the site is now set to be demolished.

Peter Hardy, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources at Buckinghamshire County Council, said: “Buckinghamshire County Council has commenced renovation works to the former Thames Valley Police headquarters landmark building on Exchange Street in Aylesbury. The premises are currently being pressure-washed and exterior decoration will start shortly.

“There has already been a good level of interest from potential tenants and we are exploring this. However, we still need to examine all options and fully market the property, and would be happy to hear of any other proposals.”
