CAMPAIGN TO LOWER PETROL PRICES IN AYLESBURY - IS WORKING

(FRIDAY AUGUST 25) A BUCKS Herald campaign to lower fuel prices in the Vale appears to be working after a mammoth drop of up to 7p in the cost of unleaded at some garages in the last week.

Aylesbury motorists have been paying some of the highest fuel prices in the country according to studies carried out in the last eight months.

And the town had been matched only by London for its expensive prices when compared to eight other areas in the South East.

Some motorists filling up in Aylesbury have paid almost 10p more per litre for fuel than neighbouring Hemel and Watford.

Previously when there was a drop in oil prices, Aylesbury continued to pay more than the average, but for the first time in recent memory, Aylesbury drivers are now paying the same as nearby towns, if not less

We launched our campaign in January and immediately received the backing of motorists and Aylesbury MP David Lidington. The findings of a study which showed Aylesbury's prices to be some of the highest in the country prompted Mr Lidington to lobby the Office of Fair Trading, which decided not to launch an investigation.

But despite the OFT refusing to take the matter further prices have at last dropped.

While some garages are still charging 101.9p, the average cost has dropped from 99.9p down to 97.1p and the cheapest is down to 93.1p, bringing Aylesbury into line with its less costly neighbours Hemel, Watford, Milton Keynes and Wycombe.

Earlier this year, several readers accused supermarket giants Tesco of inflating prices and dictating the market.

But in the last week Tesco has seemingly led the way, reducing the cost of all its fuel by 2p.
