Value of Aylesbury temporary workers recognised at awards night

Temporary workers were recognised as a vital and flexible asset to businesses during an awards ceremony at Sky Personnel in Aylesbury.

The Buckingham Street agency held an open day during National Temporary Workers week where it highlighted the good work of 'casual' employees in the Vale.

Sam Brooks, currently a technical administrator at Chiltern Railways, was named Sky's Temporary Worker of the Year after receiving a flurry of nominations from his previous and current employers.

"In terms of his skill level he picks up the job very quickly, is very competent, reliable and calm under pressure, and he fits into the team very well," said Sarah Lewis, recruitment manager at Sky. "He is very well thought of."

In second place was Simon Miller, currently working in Aylesbury Vale District Council's refuse department.

Ms Lewis said he is 'a very flexible worker who can do a quality job and is hard working'.

Mushtaq Ahmed was third. He currently works at the Faccenda Hatchery in Quainton but has also worked at Chiltern View Nursing Home in Stone.

"He is basically the sort of person who would do anything for anybody, he really goes the extra mile.

"From Sky's perspective he is always available at short notice and always says yes to everything and is a really good all-rounder."

Sky Personnel supplies around 30 businesses within Aylesbury Vale and at any one time has about 150 of its workers in employment.

Ms Lewis said the best qualities in a temporary worker are flexibility and reliability.

"Most companies are using temporary workers because they might have an emergency or somebody is off sick or on holiday so we need to be able to rely on someone to come in and pick up the job very quickly," she said.

"You need to be unflappable and have good all round skills because you need to be quite adaptable as well."

She said in that in the credit crunch businesses were looking more and more towards temporary workers.

"For a company it's the flexibility of staff. You can turn the tap on and off as needed.

"The workers have already been interviewed and references checked and recruited by us. It also helps if they are looking for a permanent role and they can trial a temporary worker so see if they are suitable for that position."
