Success for Aylesbury manufacturer after it taps into Middle Eastern export market
The work of a local manufacturing company which has thrived during the credit crunch by tapping into the export market has been praised by Aylesbury MP and shadow foreign office minister David Lidington.
Lund Halsey designs, manufactures and installs technical furniture used in environments such as TV news studios, air traffic control, oil refineries and governmental offices.
In the last three years the Aylesbury firm has grown its export market from around 10 per cent of its business to 35 per cent. The strategy has paid off, as in the last year alone, turnover has gone up by a quarter.
Owner Chris Lund, said: "Without the work on exports we would have been struggling throughout this recession wheras in fact we are thriving and growing.
"In the past our market was mostly in the UK. But now we have got a new chief executive, Charles Evett, who has been leading the drive for exports, particularly in the Middle East.
"We have been landing some large contracts for aluminium smelters, petro-chemical refineries, transport infrastrucutre control rooms and for an air traffic control room in Saudi Arabia and we also supply Al Jazeera."
Mr Lidington, who through his role has travelled abroad extensively, recently visited the company and Mr Lund said he 'gave us some very good advice as to where emerging markets are and potential growth areas coming up'.
The company, which currently has 34 staff, is looking to recruit more employees.
It also wants to expand its council-owned premises in Gatehouse Close and is currently in negotiations with Aylesbury Vale Estates (a new venture between AVDC and the Akeman Partnership) to increase the length of its lease to make it more secure.
"Certainly our wish is to remain in Aylesbury," said Mr Lund, who set up the business in the town in 1982.
Mr Lidington said of his visit: "I was very impressed because what they have got is a really top quality modern manufacturing company in Aylesbury.
He added: "Aylesbury like everywhere else has seen the loss of a lot of manufacturing businesses in recent decades and it is good to see a high quality niche manufacturer, selling worldwide and so earning good hard currency for Britain."
