Olympics talk with Ian Barham: How 2012 can boost your CV
For many people there is nothing more disheartening than receiving feedback from a job application or job interview saying that you lacked the necessary practical experience.
When setting out on your career path, or when looking for a change of direction this "Catch 22" situation can be particularly galling.
How can you get a job without the right experience and how can you get the experience without being in work? For many people, community volunteering offers a solution.
Over 3300 people in Buckinghamshire have already registered an interest in being a volunteer for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The formal selection process for the 70,000 volunteers needed to assist with the wide range of tasks including the management of the sports events, language support and medical care doesn't even commence until 2010 and so final the number of applicants is expected to greatly exceed places available.
So why wait? Act now to develop your volunteering CV, improve your chances of selection, enhance your future career opportunities and to use your skills, enthusiasm and experience for the benefit of our community.
Check out the bewildering array of volunteering opportunities currently available locally.
A great source of information is the www.do-it.org website, this provides a really easy search tool to help find the right volunteering opportunity for you.
Simply type in the type of activity that interests you (listed alphabetically from Animals to Youth), the times you are available and the distance you are able to travel and the site does the rest for you. I found 471 different opportunities available within 5 km of my house including; multi-media arts projects, sports coaching, driving, fundraising and even cake baking.
Many of these opportunities are managed through our local volunteer centre, Vale Volunteers who can be contacted on 01296 337456 or by e-mail at volunteer@valevolunteers.org.uk
The centre are particularly keen to hear from business professionals who are able to offer a little of their time and expertise to support a community organisation either as a one off or on an ongoing basis.
Getting involved now will provide you with some volunteering experience which will help you decide whether to apply formally to be a Games volunteer.
Although such experience will not be not a prerequisite, to use another sporting clich, it will prevent you being left in the starting blocks next year. To find out more about the London 2012 volunteer programme visit www.london2012.com/volunteering
