Campsite grant boosts farm
A FARM in Ivinghoe has been awarded a £25,000 grant to diversify into the tourism industry.
The grant has enabled Angie and Charlie Leach, of Town Farm, to build facilities for a campsite and caravan park nestled at the foot of the Chiltern Hills.
Mr Leach said: “All farms have to diversify because the return on agriculture is so bad, anything that brings in extra income is a very important part of the business.
“People would tell us that there were not many campsites in this area,” he continued.
“We are at the bottom of the Ridgeway path and the youth hostel in Ivinghoe shut a few years ago so there is a shortage of places to stay.
“With the 2012 London Olympics just around the corner and an increased interest in holidays in the UK, there’s never been a better time for farm tourism.”
Business has been good so far, especially following the launch of the site’s website.
The Leader rural fund grant, which comes from the European Union, has helped with set-up costs including building a toilet, shower blocks and a games room.
Mike Furness, Leader project officer, said: “The Chilterns is a beautiful area with masses of walking, cycling, wildlife and history. 50 million people visit the area every year and we are keen to encourage them to stay for short-breaks.
“There has always been a shortage of beds which is why Leader was pleased to support Charlie and Angie because their venture addresses this shortage and brings visitor spend into local shops, restaurants and pubs,” he added.
