Bucks road closed amid safety fears

Road chiefs closed Steeple Claydon Road in Twyford on Friday until further notice due to safety fears.

Bucks County Council said embankments to the disused railway bridge have deteriorated to such an extent that the bridge has become unsafe and the team have been forced to implement an emergency road closure.

All of the county council roads are inspected on a regular basis and it was after an inspection on Thursday evening that the decision was taken to close the road.

It is the bridge itself that is closed and all accesses can be reached either via Calvert crossroads or Charndon.

The land used to be owned by the British Rail Board, and was later sold to a private company that has since gone into liquidation.

It is believed that the land is now owned by local land owners.

As soon as Transport for Buckinghamshire can establish who owns the land, they will repair the embankment to make safe and recover the costs from the landowner.

Valerie Letheren, Cabinet Member for Transport said: "We regularly inspect our roads and when problems like this arise, it is important to put safety first, which is why we have taken the decision to close this road on a temporary basis until the problem has been rectified."
