'Aylesbury Vale should give more help to new immigrants'
Public services in the Vale need to pay a lot more attention to Eastern Europeans, a meeting has been told.
The comments came as district councillors discussed a new community cohesion strategy last week.
Councillor Raj Khan said: "There's nothing in it about Romanians and Eastern Europeans.
"I have a lot of dealings with that community, but there's no infrastructure for them.
"They've come to me saying they've been robbed, but don't know who to turn to.
"We should be putting more effort into supporting them."
And he continued: "In my opinion this is geared too much toward the established communities.
"More needs to be done for the people that are just moving into Aylesbury, like the Arab community."
And Councillor Alan Sherwell, who leads the council's Lib Dem group, said: "If someone comes into a school in Aylesbury and their first language is Urdu, there will be other people who they will be able to speak to.
"But if their first language is Estonian or Bulgarian, they may not have that support.
"We mustn't ignore that."
The council said that Eastern Europeans are included when the report refers to black and ethic minorities.
