Aylesbury no longer a sleepy little market town!

THAT'S the view of today's correspondent.

Dear Editor,

I've been really enjoying your series of articles about the Cambridge Street Odeon as like many residents of this town I have fond memories of that local landmark: amazing to think that its single auditorium could once seat almost as many people as the multiplex' 6 screens put together! Such a shame that something couldn't be done to keep the Art Deco building in use, like how the Berkhamsted Rex has been resurrected as a highly successful indy cinema and restaurant which are packed most evenings.

However sometimes we do have to let go of the past and the recent announcements of two new supermarkets in The Vale seem to confirm that the council has finally accepted that Aylesbury is no longer a sleepy little market town! Considering Aylesbury is supposed to be a bastion of Thatcherism there' been a distinct lack of free market forces to be found here lately, as exemplified by some of the costliest pertol prices in the UK. Hopefully with the new stores competing for our custom things shall improve.

Stephen N, Aylesbury.
