Aylesbury does need a more continental feel
Our correspondent Ian McClurg-Welland believes proposals to pedestrianise the town centre are spot on.
Further to your article regarding a 'continental feel for Aylesbury' (Bucks Herald, 15 April 2009), I certainly agree that a more integrated pedestrianisation for Cambridge Street and Buckingham Street areas would enhance the space, provide a more attractive proposition and furthermore encourage viability in the long run for business.
Commercial attractiveness for lettings should increase as the local economy improves thus leading to more diversity in offer.
Whilst I acknowledge Aylesbury Society's viewpoint on car parking, surely a wiser option is to promote a more greener focus now that our local transport is more closely linked up with the railway station and the option of rail travel from Aylesbury Vale Parkway is available.
Such a change to greener options would cut carbon omissions in the town centre allowing for cleaner buildings and environs. Perhaps a more long term proposal could be for definitive park and ride from three other points around Aylesbury to further advance this greener approach?
Regrettably our town centres remain car-centric but we should take the option to use public transport more often - we just need to change our habits. Within the current economic climate, public transport presents a more positive financial option as well rather than the car. Oxford and Cambridge have superb park and ride, and nearby in Wycombe there are positive responses to park and ride.
I commend the view for more trees.
Carefully done, this could be an asset for our forthcoming 'continental' cosmopolitan-county town centre!
Coupled with an array of street entertainment, buoyant market and alfresco coffee-dining, Aylesbury will stake its claim again as 'the' location in the County for work, rest and play.
Finally, how about Free Wifi in the Town Centre? If people have access to free wifi from there laptops, palm-tops, and mobiles, they would surf, have refreshments, and go and buy!
I wish all those involved in delivering this the very best.
