AYLESBURY CONCERT BAND DELIGHTED WITH GOLD MEDAL

(THURSDAY DECEMBER 14) THE Aylesbury Community Concert Band has seen off competition from other musical groups in the Midlands to win a top award at a regional music festival.

The band, directed by Alan Mossford, gained a gold award at the Midlands competition of the National Concert Band Festival, held in Northampton .

The award means that the band may be invited to play in a National Festival of Gold Award Winners in Gateshead in April 2007.

Alan Mossford said: "The band gave a brilliant performance and thoroughly deserved the gold award. It shows how much its standards have improved in recent years and is a tribute to all the hard work of the players."

Ruth Holiday, chairman of the Aylesbury Community Concert Band, said the success has been due to Alan's dedication and inspirational leadership.

Mr Mossford, the band's musical director since 1996, held his last performance on December 3, when he conducted the first half of the band's Christmas concert in St Mary's Church, Aylesbury, before handing over his baton to his successor, Duncan Stubbs, for the second half.

The concert of seasonal music featured some of the band's soloists and Mr Mossford conducted the final item, an arrangement of Auld Lang Syne before he left the stage to a standing ovation. Mr Mossford will continue with the band as an instrumentalist.

Ruth Holiday said: "It was fitting that the band's performance and the gold award came just before Alan laid down his baton as musical director."

Under Mr Mossford's direction, the band has previously played at the National Concert Band Festival in 1999, when it gained a bronze award, and in 2001, when its performance earned a silver award.

Since its formation in 1996, the Aylesbury Community Concert Band, as well as becoming well known in the Vale, has undertaken tours to the Moselle Valley, Bruges, North Carolina and the Black Forest in Germany.

The band is made up of 40 people with an age range of 20 to 80 years old, who practise once a week at Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School.
