Aylesbury MP named as an 'influential right-winger'
Aylesbury MP David Lidington has been named as the 90th 'most influential right-winger' in a poll by the Daily Telegraph.
Mr Lidington, the Minister for Europe, is a new entry in the list, which collates the UK's most powerful people whose political outlook is right of centre.
He is described as 'one of the few Tory MPs liked by virtually all his colleagues', chosen for his role 'precisely because of his party-wide popularity'.
It adds: "Neither seen as a eurospectic nor a Europhile, he is a pragmatist. If anyone can suck the poison out of this poisoned chalice of a job, he can."
Speaking on Monday, Mr Lidington said he had not yet seen the poll.
But he said: "I have to say I don't know whether it is flattering or not - I do take it with a pinch of salt.
"I doubt it is the most scientific exercise and I suspect it depends on a great number of things.
"It is all very entertaining but I am not going to lay awake at night worrying about it."
Mr Lidington was in Germany at the weekend representing the UK at the 20th anniversary of the country's reunification.
He said he told Chancellor Angela Merkel, who enjoys hiking, to bring her boots with her next time she comes to Chequers so that she can walk around the scenic Chilterns.
