Aston Clinton welcomes its first new rector in half a century
ELIZABETH Moxley was appointed as the new Rector of the United Benefice of Aston Clinton with Buckland and Drayton Beauchamp - the first to be inducted in half a century.
A quarter peel of bells called to the people to the ceremony on July 7 where Rev Elizabeth Moxley was installed as Rector by the Archdeacon of Buckingham, the Ven. Karen Gorham.
Patrons Dr David Cram and Mr Roger Pegg presented Elizabeth to the Bishop of Buckingham the Rt. Rev.Alan Wilson and members of the ministry team pledged their support. Canon Alan Bennett, the Benefice Rector for twenty years, who retired in September and now lives in Spain, read the Gospel.
Although it is not unique, it is relatively rare for a serving Curate to be appointed to the same benefice as its Incumbent. But Elizabeth's undoubted spirituality, her prior knowledge of the three parishes, her grasp of the problems that the parishes face in the future and the force of her personality fought off the opposition and secured her the post.
During the Dedication of the Ministers and the people, led by the Wendover Area Dean, Mark Dearnley, representatives from each of the three parishes gave Mrs Moxley symbols of the ministry and she pledged herself to the community.
After making and signing the Declaration and Oaths she was instituted into the spiritual oversight of the three parishes and then inducted into 'the Freehold' of all church buildings, the churchyards and the rectory.
The six Churchwardens symbolically presented her with the keys for the three churches. She was finally installed as the Rector and presented to the people by the Bishop.
At a reception given by parishioners after the service, Elizabeth thanked everybody for their support and said: "I am really excited about taking up my new role as Rector.
"All three churches are in good heart and I am looking forward to working with you all in sharing God's love with the people of these villages."
Elizabeth and her husband, Chris, came to the church in June 2005.
Elizabeth quickly became known as a deeply spiritual person with a commitment to ministering to everyone and a willingness to visit everyone, not only the sick and those who are housebound.
She is a frequent visitor at the meetings of all the organisations and has won an enormous amount of respect as a result. She worked as a teacher of English and Head of Year at comprehensive schools in her former career which spanned some 25 years.
She also brought experience gained as a missionary in Papua New Guinea and as a Churchwarden in her former parish at Burnham.
