Anger over roundabout plant rules

Bucks County Council has been accused of double standards over its policy on roundabout maintenance.

Keith Turner, clerk to Aylesbury Town Council, said that County Hall does not allow the town council to grow anything more than a metre high on the roundabouts it is responsible for in Aylesbury.

Yet he said the county council flouts these rules on other roundabouts in the Vale and Bucks.

"You have got some roundabouts which are 20 feet high and you are truly unable to see through them, but the county council is saying to us that we shouldn't have them more than a metre. It is inequitable and not sticking to the rules."

A county council spokesman said: "The roundabouts that are sponsored under the roundabout sponsorship scheme are planted and maintained in accordance with agreed limitations.

"The arrangement for the sponsorship of roundabouts by the town council was made some years ago and the county would be happy to review it with the town council.

"If the town council wished to exceed the height restriction in some locations, we would be happy to discuss this option.

"This would need to be done with highway safety in mind, and would need to be the subject of an independent safety audit."
