The Grange celebrated its best A-Level results ever today, with 60 per cent of grades at A* to C.

Deputy head Jan Jones praised the hard work of staff and students, and said that all the young people who wanted a place at university got in.

She said: “One of our high flyers is Alice Clayton who got an A*, two As and a B. She is going to Oxford.

“It is the first time that we have ever had a student get into Oxbridge for many years so that is a real joy.

“She was our head girl and if there was anything to be part of she would be part of it. All that as well as being an excellent student.”

Other bright sparks included Sophie Marcuson, 18, who achieved an A* an A and a B and has won a coveted place to read English at Reading University.

Monique Latty, 18, who received A, B and C grades is also breaking the mould, by taking a place at Swansea University to study civil engineering.

On choosing the course, which is a subject predominantly chosen by men, she said: “I wanted to do something different and something where there is a real need for it.

“Also, as a woman I wanted to be an inspiration for others and make a difference.”
