Just two officers were left in charge of 320 prisoners on a night shift at Springhill prison, inspectors found during a surprise visit.
Both Springhill and Grendon prisons have been hit by staff shortages in an attempt to cut costs within the prison service.

Inspectors from the Independent Monitoring Board of prisons said the problem of staff shortages is so chronic there are inadequate levels of night staffing.

Grendon's status as a therapeutic prison is also under threat as there are limited number of staff who can lead the therapy classes.

For a special report on the state of the prison service in Aylesbury Vale, pick up a copy of The Bucks Herald, out now.

Aren't prisoners locked in their cells on a night shift? Wouldn't they be asleep most of the time anyway? (I'm wondering how difficult it is to 'look after' 320 sleeping people locked in cells.)

Shame on me, I should have realised - and, of course, the last paragraph should have given the game away as well - "therapeutic prison" and "therapy staff".
How many of us hard working average Joes get the chance of a bit of therapy to ease the stresses and strains of coping with the idiots in the ivory towers of power?

Those prisons are Open prisons and are used for inmates that have served their time in Higher security prisons previously. They have more freedom so they can get used to life outside, so being thereputic helps them enter the real world again calmly so they do not commit the crimes they commited before, so I completely do get the thereputic prisons due to my clearly more open mind!! Sorry the two of you above are not so open minded and how one of you have already branded some of them by stating that they had victims when that is NOT always the case!!
