A WOMAN from Aylesbury had the surprise of her life last week when her boyfriend got down on one knee on the stage of Gala Bingo.
Just before the first draw last Thursday night Steve Frith, 46, got up on the stage at the bingo hall on High Street to ask his girlfriend, Elice Deakan, 35, to marry him. They had only been together for about two months, but Thursday night proved they were both ready to get engaged.
Miss Deakan said she had no idea about what was to happen. "It was a complete and utter shock. It was supposed to be, me, my brother and my sister-in-law. We went in and my sister-in-law said 'where shall we sit?' I said at the top end, but she said nearer the front."
All she knew from her brother was that her soon-to-be fiance was bringing a few friends out for the evening. Mr Frith said: "I was nervous and a bit apprehensive, but I knew she was going to say yes. I was nervous getting up on stage. I asked her to marry me and put the ring on her finger. It's a plain gold band with two raised stones and three diamonds."
The couple are now saving up for their engagement party in January and their wedding a year later. Miss Deakan has already chosen her wedding dress. She saw it just hours before the proposal, but still had no idea about what her fiance had in store that evening.
