BIERTON and Broughton residents are asking Bucks County Council to save villagers' lives in the area - by sanctioning plans for a bypass.
Villagers have campaigned unsuccessfully for a bypass for nearly 15 years. Meanwhile, volumes of traffic in the area have steadily increased and residents now fear their roads are becoming accident 'blackspots'.
The heavy traffic flow is attributed to arterial routes - such as the A41 bypass - bringing cars and, increasingly, heavy goods vehicles into the area. It is also thought that satellite navigation systems are channelling motorists through Bierton and Broughton.
Former Mayor of Aylesbury and county councillor Raj Khan is so concerned by the situation he brought a motion before Bucks County Council at a meeting today (Thursday).
Cllr Khan's motion challenges BCC to recognise 'the pressure of traffic', its adverse effect upon village life in Broughton and Bierton and the 'obvious and immediate' need for a bypass.
Residents have put together a 550-signature petition that was presented at the meeting.
Cllr Khan said: "I'm putting the motion forward and feel it's very important. I now ask the community to come to the meeting and exercise their democratic rights. Bierton hasn't asked for much in the past and now deserves to be heard. I am urging the county council to work in the interests of Bierton - today, not tomorrow."
Last week, residents gathered outside Bierton's Jubilee Hall to show their support for the proposed bypass.
The Bucks County Council meeting starts at 10am at The Coach House, Green Park Training & Conference Centre, Stablebridge Road, Aston Clinton.
