A FARM contractor made a stand against a multi-national business in Aylesbury town centre this afternoon.
Kevin Smith, of Pasture Care, took part in a demonstration with a farm worker outside the Orange shop in Market Square over a contract dispute.

He said: "In January I approached Orange because my old provider was very expensive and I wanted a better deal. So I asked if the coverage was any good and at the Orange shop in Aylesbury they said it was good, if not better.

"The question was as straight as that and the answer was just as straight telling me it was better."

However, Mr Smith would have to wait four weeks for his telephone numbers to be transferred to Orange.

Unfortunately that did not go smoothly and it was another four weeks before the transition was made between providers.

He added: "That's when we realised there were problems and I found out I had issues with their coverage."

The land on which Mr Smith works is around Thame, within a three mile radius of the town the Orange website says there is excellent coverage and beyond that it is considered a "high quality voice and standard data" area.

Because Mr Smith had gone over the 14 day 'cooling off' period when a customer can take a phone back for a full refund, he was told that he was stuck with the three business phones, which cost a total of £110 a month.

He even claims that when Orange customer services were on the phone to him in his farm yard they asked him to call from a landline because the signal was so bad.

During his campaign outside the Orange shop, Mr Smith was given lots of support from members of the public who said they have had contract problems with their mobile phone providers and their strict contracts.

A woman who asked to be named only as Annie, a life coach from Buckingham, said: "All we are after these days is the truth and people need to get out there like this man and demand the truth.

"It's about time that things became clearer and more transparent amongst businesses and the leadership of our communities.

"I think it's marvellous what this man is doing.

"Farmers are part of a strong community and he knows what he is talking about.

"Our children are those who inherit what we believe in, so let's clean up our act."

Mr Smith added that the phones are not just used to contact customers, but they act as a lifeline for his workers so he felt this issue is a health and safety risk.

The manager at the Orange shop declined to comment.

What do you think to this story? What is your relationship like with your mobile phone provider?
