Radical plans to save the Civic Centre from destruction and turn it into a library and information hub have been put forward by the Aylesbury Society.
Ken Evans, who sits on the society's executive committee, believes the Civic Centre can still have a future as a hub containing the lending library, reference library, coffee shop, meeting rooms, tourist office and information centre.

A study into moving the current library in Walton Street – together with the bus station – has been made a top priority in council-backed Aylesbury Vale Advantage's draft plan.

Mr Evans said his proposal could save taxpayers millions of pounds by recycling an old building rather than constructing something new.

"There is a great deal of support for the Civic Centre, for all its shortcomings people still regard it as quite an iconic, attractive building," he said.

The Civic is being demolished next year to make way for a carpark, while in the long term the site will be used as part of the proposed Waterside shopping scheme.

Aylesbury Vale District Council said saving the Civic was 'not an option'.

This is a great idea. The existing library building is off-pitch and in a poor state.

Recycling on a grand scale, what a good idea.

I see the existing council (that want to get rid) have put in the first of the 'problems' already. Please don't keep telling me to re-cycle if you can't be bothered AVDC. We don't need anymore car parks, you've priced us out of the ones we have as it is. what we do need is accessable public buildings.

Of course, the best option would have been not waste whatever the figure is this week, £65 million?, on the new theatre, and given the Civic a re-furb, and maybe spent a few quid promoting the place more.Get a few higher profile stars.
Hindsight's always 20/20 though.

I'll be honest, I wont be sad to see the building go!

Scout,

Its not really the most attractive building in world, it needs the old Maxwell boilers to keep it heated and electrfied and once its down, if this waterside scheme does go ahaed maybe Aylesbury can actually slowly start restoring itself to its former glory.
