Lower speed limit planned for A41

The section of the A41 Bicester Road, where three people lost their lives last week, will have its speed limit reduced in the coming months.
The Kingswood stretch of the road, which runs between Aylesbury and Bicester, will become a 40mph zone in a move due to be implemented during the summer.

It currently has the national speed limit.

The decision to reduce the speed limit was taken before the crash on Sunday, July 18.

There had been four collisions on that particular stretch of road in the past three years.

In total, there have been 41 collisions on the A41 Bicester Road over that period, seven of which have resulted in people being killed or seriously injured.

This does not take into account the recent crash.

Users of the Bucks Herald website called for these measures to be put into place after hearing about the collision.

NicT said: "It is about time that the A41 was made 50mph with the most dangerous sections being double white lines, or even average speed cameras being placed along the road.

"The road has become more of a hazard over the years."

I think it should be clarified that the speed limit is not being reduced where the accident occured last week. It's being reduced in Kingswood, from just after the Crooked Billet until just before the section of dual carrigeway, the accident happened at the Ludgershall turn which is much further towards Bicester. I would also like to know from these statistics, how many of the accidents quoted actually happened on the stretch of road which is having the speed limit lowered, the 'facts' here seem to have been skewed to suit the article

Its not lower speed limits that are needed, speed itself does not cause accidents, the real cause is bad driving and only proper driver training willcorrect that. Lowering the speed limit will not stop bad drivers exceeding the limit, overtaking in the wrong places etc. All lower speed limits will do is make some drivers impatiant and cause them to make bad decisions that will add to the accident statistics.

#2 I agree. there will always be drivers who will adhere to the posted limit. Reducing this to 40 will simply make the impatient drivers even more so. there are too many drivers who believe that the posted limit does not apply to them, they think they know best & will see a nice, straight stretch of road and try to floor the accelerator.
You will then have a scenario whereby more accidents occur simply because anybody wanting to come out of a side road will believe the car in the distance is driving to the posted limit (and why shouldn't they?) but if it is doing double the limit, it will reach them in half the time they expect - so pulling out could be fatal.

Is this all the council can do - something not going the way we want lower the speed limit. How irrisponsible can you get, as said in #3 the bad drivers will just be seen as worse and with the imminant removal of the speed cameras who is going to enforce these lower limits.

Just because the population is aging its not an excuse to reduce the speed limits to the speed the cars could do when they passed their tests. I think people should be re-assessed for driving on a regular basis and if found wanting then more training or no licence would be the result.

Love the idea of regular assessments, perhaps this could be included as part of the car's documents?
So in order to tax a vehicle you need to show car's MOT, insurance, YOUR MOT.
It would certainly generate additional work in these troubled times.
The person MOT needn't be too involved, simply a case of reading a standard number plate at the required distance, answering a few questions on the highway code and taking the 'examiner' out for a 15 minute drive?
Interesting what JR said in #3, I am a member of a couple of car forums and I often read younger drivers saying they always ignore speed limits as they know what is a safe speed for their car on a stretch of road. My argument is always - you can never account for the actions of the other idiot and nor can you account for the millions of cars on the roads that drop oil / grease everywhere - turning a dry road into a skating rink.

I love the fact that there is NO MENTION OF WHAT CAUSED THE CRASH!

How can they HONESTLY say that lowering the limit below 85% speeds will "improve safety".

If those crashses were caused by people not paying attention, this scheme is meaningless.

Speed limits should be based on what most people drive, the 85% speeds, no set ABSURDLY LOW.

No doubt some of the wrecks are REGRESSION TO THE MEAN RELATED. so will you claim "success" when accidents go back to their normal level??????

You could put a flower pot out there and leave the speed limit alone and the deaths would go down most likely!
