Bucks County Council has agreed to make immediate cuts of more than £9 million from its current budget and borrow £3m from its reserves.
The cuts come after the withdrawal of the Government's Area Based Grants to local authorities, which have forced the council to make immediate in-year savings of £9.2m.

In addition, it has had to take nearly £3m from its reserves to cover the shortfall of £12 million.

The Council is already committed to making savings of £52m over the next four years through efficiencies, including £27m through its Transformation initiative.

And it also bracing itself for massive cuts to Government funding when the results of the comprehensive spending review is announce in October - cuts which David Shakespeare, leader of the council, says will dramatically impact upon what services they can offer residents.

Cllr Shakespeare said: "The local spending pressures and loss of the Area Based Grant are a significant blow to our current year's budget.

"We have no choice but to make reductions in our budgets, to ensure we are not spending council taxpayers' money which we do not have.

"These are unprecedented times, and local authorities are having to make unprecedented decisions.

"We have considered long and hard as to how we can achieve these savings with as little impact possible on services, residents and staff. Wherever possible, we have tried to make savings through service delivery, however some posts will be put at risk."

BCC is potless - but I'll bet they still find the cash to pay all their top wage earners.
And I bet they'll still go ahead with the very expensive feasability study concerning the relocation of the bus station!
Here's a novel idea, the two huge buildings occupied by BCC must be costing a fortune, not to mention half a multi storey car park given over to BCC staff as well as some of the other buildings around town occupied by BCC.
How about utilising some of the empty warehouse units around the town? It wouldn't cost that much to insulate the external walls, put in mezzanine floors and convert the large areas into office space. And all these warehouse units also have car parking facilities - I imagine there would be some phenominal savings to be made. On top of this, the concrete monstrosity can be demolished and replaced with more shopping units (which will lie empty).

Does seem strange that BCC is prepared to tell the tax payer to use the local public transport to get to work but is willing to to provide 100s of spaces availble for single occupant car journeys at a cost to the council tax payer!

Begamo - If I were in charge at least my hairbrained, ill thought out ideas wouldn't cost anywhere near as much to implement as the hairbrained ill thought out ideas BCC currently foist onto us - for a start, my ideas haven't been passed by a bunch of overpaid dribbling idiots - there's only one of me & I earn just above minimum wage.

JR,
I think they actually would if you looked properly into it!

When you say "looked properly into it" do you mean like - spend £3 million tarting up the bus station then pay out shedloads of cash to consultants to look into moving said bus station somewhere else?

JR,

I fully agree with you about BCC and the wastage of our money coupled with the hair brained ideas.

My point is that these problem aren't as easy as you say to sort out, and whatever the decisions that are made someone will be upset by them....it just seems whatever they do you tend to be the one they upset. :-)

But these people are paid lots of money to come up with plans and then debate them (my ideas were off the top of my head). It seems to me that rather than debate, they employ very expensive consultants, pay thousands for reports and simpy sweep everything under the carpet when their daft ideas are found out by the public.
They treat the public pot like their own personal free for all cornucopia - and I'm not just talking about BCC, but also AVDC.
