A GROUP of cyclists from Stoke Mandeville Hospital will set off on a charity ride in a bid to raise £50,000 for spinal patients later this month.
The group of four bikers are expecting to set off from Cheshunt heading to Edinburgh and back.
This is the main event in a series of fundraisers to raise the money for the spinal injuries unit at Stoke Mandeville.
Recently, a charity ball at Pendley Manor, Tring, raised £12,000 for the fund.
There will be five people biking the route which is expected to take about five days to complete.
The cash will go to the Stoke Mandeville Spinal foundation which was set up to help improve the quality of life for people affected by spinal cord injury.
Funds raised from the ball will go directly towards a new purpose-built research facility which will investigate the practicalities of spinal cord injury, as well as leading scientific research.
David Griffiths, assistant director of operations and one of the biking team, said: "The ball was a chance for people to show their support for the foundation's aims, and we were amazed at the response we received.
"It was a great evening and raised a significant amount of money - on behalf of team ApresSCI I would like to thank everyone who attended the event, the organisers and auction prize donors who made the event such a success.
"With a near-900 mile cycle ride looming it was great to have such a fun distraction before throwing ourselves back into the training regime."
About 150 people went to the ball where there was a charity auction with items including British Grand Prix and a week's holiday in Cornwall.
The team's name, ApresSCI is broken down as 'apres' the French for after and SCI for spinal cord injury.
They will set off on July 26 from London riding an average of 140 miles per day over six days in the cycling equivalent to completing 33 back-to-back marathons.
