A former mayor of Aylesbury sparked a diplomatic incident with Luton after saying that the Bedfordshire town made her feel 'uneasy'.
Cllr Jenny Puddefoot was speaking about the mayor's valuable chain of office at a town council meeting when she said: "The only time I have ever felt uneasy (wearing it) was when I went to Luton."

But her comments provoked a storm over the border.

Angry Luton Mayor Tom Shaw said: "Yet again, just as Luton's starting to look up you've got someone from outside the town trying to knock us down.

"If she doesn't feel safe she can come over here and I'll show her around the town personally."

Cllr Puddefoot has apologised for the gaffe, admitting she had kicked herself the moment she had mentioned the town's name.

She added: "I've visited Luton twice and I've been very impressed with it."

Luton is the sewer of Bedfordshire, Aylesbury is the sewer of Buckinghamshire. I'm sure people coming to Aylesbury from Luton feel as uneasy as anyone from Aylesbury going to Luton does.

I think Wycombe and Chesham relegate Aylesbury to third in that list.

I've worked with Cllr Puddefoot in my distant past and found her absolutely charming. Let be honest if you dont feel safe somewhere why should you hide it!

Absolutley right SxSn, Wycombe and Chesham both far seedier than Aylesbury could ever manage.

However, what has not been reported here is the context in which the remark was made.

Why was Cllr Puddefoot speaking about the Mayors chain of office at the Town Council meeting?
What was being discussed?
Why was it pertinent for Cllr Puddefoot to disclose to the Town Council the only time she had felt uneasy wearing the chain?
And, if there was ever a time a public official representing this town felt uneasy in doing so; why hide it? Why not pass that information on to the Town Council as a whole and the Town Clerk?

This is a very cheap story on the part of the Bucks Herald, not reported in full or in context.

Cllr Puddefoot has nothing to apologise for, she was not passing comment on the town of Luton, merely disclosing a time when she personally felt uncomfortable carrying out her duties in public office.

And how did her comments provoke a storm over the border? Was anybody from Luton at said meeting? No.
Did Bucks Herald ring them up and ask for a comment? Me thinks Yes!

BH owes Cllr Puddefoot an apology for what they have attempted to do here.

The Bucks Herald is a joke of a newspaper, the website is rarely updated and hardly any information is provided with regards ongoings within the local area...I have on numerous times attempted to look up information with progress on various construction jobs around the town (such as the regeneration of Walton Court shopping centre), and there is never any information. It's the safest (blandest) paper and set-up ever. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
