TRANSPORT chiefs this week hailed a breakthrough in tackling Aylesbury town centre's gridlock misery.
Three weeks ago, Bucks County Council was slammed after long tailbacks around the Horse and Jockey junction caused hours of misery for drivers.

Roadworks on Elmhurst Road - which are set to last until April - saw motorists hit out after crippling delays hampered their journeys.

But this week drivers have reported that traffic has been far lighter and journey times greatly decreased since the work started earlier this month.

A spokesman from County Hall told the Bucks Herald that officers have been out in force since the roadworks began trying to find ways of cutting the frustrating delays.

And traffic lights at the controversial junction have been resequenced to prevent bottlenecks developing.

The spokesman said: "Engineers have been making changes to the signal settings to improve traffic flows.

"We will continue to make changes to signal phasing as it's needed.

"We've also been listening to residents and we've put signs up to help motorists find alternative routes.

"We're pretty sure that drivers from further afield have now found alternative routes while the work is being carried out.

"It has to be said as well that traffic flow at that junction will have been significantly affected by the snow."

Are you kidding me? It took an hour this morning and yesterday morning to get into Town - usually a 10 minute drive. They've just moved the problem from one part of the town to another.

The morning a few weeks ago it took me 4 hours to get from Leighton Buzzard to Oxford I vowed to avoid Aylesbury until the roadworks were complete. I now do a far extended route to MK, Buckingham and Bicester but at least I get to work on time. The lighter traffic must be in part due to many people doing the same. Aylesbury's economy must be suffering as a result of all this as it used to be the place I did my shopping on the way home. Not until this is all over! Roll on April!

The last two mornings it has taken me twice as long to get through the junction than for the last two weeks.
So maybe some places have got better but for me it is has got much worse.

The delay this morning was caused, in part to some roadworks on the railway bridge. I think they were filling in a hole in the road - and at 8.50 they upped and left. Very convenient that they should do this at rush hour, who plans these things?! Situation not helped at all due to the usual problem of selfish drivers who seem to think that Red lights can be ignored if they are in a hurry or there's a 'y' in the day.

I must have been dreaming as I drove around this morning.
Solid traffic from the RBH right down to the Henley's roundabout.
People coming off the bicester road wanting to go straight ahead were then joining the end of the queue & preventing anything from leaving the weedon road.
As I drove along the almost empty weedon road towards the H&J I could see the frustration in driver's faces as they sat in a queue tailling almost back to the H&J lights.
For my part, I made it through a green light, turning right towards town) only to sit for ever in traffic that was solid right up to the RBH.
When I eventually managed to turn into Dunsham lane, there was traffic tailling right along there as well - not helped by selfish parents dumping their cars right opposite legally parked cars (in the marked off areas) - and I was held up by selfish drivers who cannot wait for an opening in front of the parked car - they simply overtake it then sit blocking the middle of the road because they can't go any further!

As for the tailbacks down the buckingham and Bicester roads, I'm certain much of this is caused by the three crossings along New Street. They turn red almost the moment a pedestrian presses the button then stay on red long enough for a family of snails to cross - I've also noticed a similar scenario along exchange street and Friarage, not helped by the muppets trying to play frogger in the middle of exchange street - God help the traffic flow when the additional crossing is built there.

Mind you, we think it's bad now - when they chuck up the extra houses, traffic flow won't be a problem - there'll be no flow, total gridlock, problem solved.

Does it seem to anyone else that the Aylesbury rush hour seems to have lengthened significantly in the last few months? I used to be able to cycle in at 6.30am along the A41 and the traffic was slight. Now it takes several minutes to cross the road at Woodlands roundabout as the dormitory town commuters wizz off the London or wherever. Town seems a lot busier too at that time. Had the fun experience this morning on a narrow part of the A41 of an HGV behind me and another heading towards us on the other side of the road. Not much room left for me!

& apologies for the mini rant, but whilst I am on the transport subject...potholes! The A41 cycle lane, particularly in the village itself, is full of them, but guess what...once I leave the village I cannot see the potholes (despite carrying nearly as much illumination on my bike as the Luton flightpath) as the streetlights are off. Please fix the one in the middle of the Walton Street crossing too, BCC/AVDC as that nearly had me off this morning
