Emergency bridge repairs underway in Aylesbury

EMERGENCY repairs to the Black Bridge footbridge, which enters Southcourt from Stoke Road, Aylesbury, are underway (from Friday May 16) and, weather pemitting, work should be completed by the May Bank Holiday weekend (May 24).
One lane of the main bridge was closed as a matter of urgency to allow pedestrians to cross safely and traffic lights have been in use since a major fault on the footbridge was discovered last Friday (May 9).
Bridge engineers have spent the last week assessing the fault and considering how best to carry out repairs. Network Rail has fully co-operated in discussions and has given permission for work to do done without closing the rail line.
The bridge was closed when a foundation failure was discovered, caused as a result of work done in the 50s when the existing deck was put in place. One pier of the bridge was too high, the other too low - that, combined with the extremes of temperature experienced in recent years, put the mass concrete footing under strain until it finally gave out.
