AN Aylesbury company is to build one of the largest recycling waste plants in London - its biggest strategic investment to date.
Greenstar UK based in Gatehouse Way is one of the fastest growing recycling led waste management companies in the UK and has announced it will build a new plant which will process nearly 10 per cent of north London's waste.
It has acquired a 175,000sq ft warehouse building on a purpose built nine-acre site where it will build a materials recycling facility (MRF) valued at around £18m.
This investment is part of Greenstar's plan to be the first fully integrated end-to-end recycling service provider in the UK - they would manage collections, transfer of waste to the site, filter the recycling on site, take the residue to landfill and pass the recyclables onto suitable companies to be reused.
Ian Wakelin, chief executive of Greenstar UK, said: "Greenstar's investment in north London comes at a critical time. It is really significant for the capital as there is a serious shortage of local MRF capacity.
"Our new facility is right in the heartland served by the North London Waste Authority which acts on behalf of seven London local authorities, and will go a long way to providing the recyclable processing and waste bulking requirements of the area."
The company has also bought the site at a time when the capital has to increase its domestic and commercial recycling rates significantly to meet targets set by the Government which is calling for a 40 per cent national recycling rate by 2010.
Greenstar hope the facility will be fully operational by July next year.
