A Muslim group in Aylesbury has offered an olive branch to a far right organisation which plans to descend on the town in May.
Calls have been mounted for an open debate amid fears that a demonstration by 1,500 English Defence League (EDL) members on May 2 could lead to violence and disorder.

Opponents from Unite Against Fascism (UAF) plan to stage a counter protest on the same day, and both sides have clashed whenever they have met in the past.

This week an open letter was sent out by Aylesbury Muslims, an informal group of young people, inviting EDL for a chat.

It concluded: "By the end of our meeting, perhaps we will dispel misconceptions of each other.

"And if we can't leave the hall as friends, then perhaps we can leave without being enemies."

Yesterday the founder of Aylesbury's EDL division said he welcomed the opportunity to hold a proper debate, and claimed any demonstration in the town would be non-violent.

For much more on this story and to read the letter in full, pick up a copy of The Bucks Herald, out today.

who is the founder of Aylesbury's EDL division, funny to mention him but not give his name.

Is he the EDL bloke from Aylesbury who was arrested at protests in Scotland? I will have to but the paper when I get out tomorrow and read the full story.

The shroud of secrecy that surrounds this group of people only lends to their sinister edge. The balaclava photo in last weeks paper was really quite disturbing and only fuels the speculation that this group has something to hide.

Could you imagine the old Aylesbury Tories canvassing up town all decked out in balaclavas?

I agree with jonnie 5 about openess and applaud Aylesbury Muslims for their act of peace. EDL, lose the balaclavas, this is a free country with room for democratic debate and political differences, there should be no need for you to hide your faces.

nbw: you don't know anything, the people that were in the photo on the front of the newspaper were from the luton division not aylesbury, and they don't wear balaclavas when they march but don't want to be recognised in pictures due to obvious reasons. the leader is not the guy that was arrested in scotland and he wasnt arrested to do with anything with the edl it was for separate reasons, so get your facts straight before coming on here and moaning

What are the "obvious reasons" why they don't want to be recognised then? Please explain.

mcag, you either don't know your facts or you are not being honest. The Aylesbury man arrested in Edinburgh was arrested in connection with a joint Scottish Defence League and English Defence League "counter action". He was arrested for causing a breach of the peace after not responding to police requests to stop his behaviour. He has pleaded guilty. This is from the Scottish Television News website.

Well you've answered my question about the leader.

However, I have now read the Bucks Herald today and am able to ascertain that the leader will only be known by the name of "Jay". Strangely every other person reported in the article was happy to be known by their full or correct name.

Perhaps the Aylesbury Division should appear in a full and undisguised photo for The Bucks Herald in order to disassociate themselves from their balaclaved counterparts division in Luton, who's photo you don't seem to approve of.

As for getting my facts straight. I don't believe I stated any facts.

I believe I asked 3 questions and expressed an opinion, but I don't believe I stated any facts relating to the EDL.

I too would welcome an explanation of the "obvious reasons". If there are obvious reasons for disguising their identities, why hold a "public" demonstration?? Surely not for our benefit!

the photo the paper showed last week was an old photo done for the news by the luton division of the edl.
maybe people in aylesbury are unaware but luton has a bad problem with extremist muslims, it was luton that the royal anglians did their home parade in and got called baby killers and muderers.
the lads in luton face a very serious threat of violence if they get caught alone by a muslim gang on the streets. this is a fact weather you like it or not.
at our demonstrations you will find a very small minority wearing a balaclava the rest of us go open faced as we have nothing to hide and we have no intentions of breaking any laws.
as to aylesbury division staying hidden if you look in the pubs or up town you will often find one or more of us about wearing out division jumpers with pride
