Bucks County Council has been accused of double standards over its policy on roundabout maintenance.
Keith Turner, clerk to Aylesbury Town Council, said that County Hall does not allow the town council to grow anything more than a metre high on the roundabouts it is responsible for in Aylesbury.

Yet he said the county council flouts these rules on other roundabouts in the Vale and Bucks.

"You have got some roundabouts which are 20 feet high and you are truly unable to see through them, but the county council is saying to us that we shouldn't have them more than a metre. It is inequitable and not sticking to the rules."

A county council spokesman said: "The roundabouts that are sponsored under the roundabout sponsorship scheme are planted and maintained in accordance with agreed limitations.

"The arrangement for the sponsorship of roundabouts by the town council was made some years ago and the county would be happy to review it with the town council.

"If the town council wished to exceed the height restriction in some locations, we would be happy to discuss this option.

"This would need to be done with highway safety in mind, and would need to be the subject of an independent safety audit."

And where is this height measured from?
If we are to take the 1 metre rule from the road surface then that is just about OK but many roundabouts are mounds of earth rising far higher than 1 metre above the road - and this can cause many problems for car drivers where it can be especially useful to be able to see not just what is approaching from your right but also what is coming around on the opposite side. The roundabouts don't need to be wildlife havens, some of the nicest are block paved with small floral displays around them.
Of course, I suppose it is absolutely essential that the one outside BCC offices has THE biggest and best display you could ever wish to see - at what cost to the taxpayer?

The council has always had double standards about roundabouts.
The lavish the areas which are on their front doorstep while other areas in Aylesbury are woefully ignored because they can't be seen from the windows of Bucks CC.

The roundabouts by Tesco Broadfields for example are just some of the areas that Bucks CC 'can't see'.

Bucks CC (and AVDC) are there for themselves giving themselves a big pat on the back.

Now we have cuts in Government funding will the councils of Aylesbury cut back on lavish extravagent schemes or will they continue regardless and cut back on more essential services? Time will tell.

Councils are a law unto themselves. Time this country had an independant ombudsman specifically for local government so we can complain about curruption, inneficency and wastage.

How tall was that Topiary Footballer that got nicked from a roundabout just before the World Cup?
I suspect it was more than a meter....
