THE Government has turned dreams into reality for one Aylesbury secondary school this week.
Quarrendon School has had a turbulent past, having been in special measures twice, but from September 2009 it will open as The Aylesbury Vale Academy and have £1.5m invested in it over the next few years.
Schools minister Jim Knight gave the go-ahead for the plans in a letter to the sponsors, the Diocese of Oxford and Bucks County Council last week.
Principal designate Jonathan Johnson, whose leadership was pivotal in the school coming out of special measures two years ago, was pleased with the result.
Chairman of governors Keith Gray said: "I am delighted with the decision and I personally believe, along with the other governors, it is the right thing for Quarrendon."
This move will enable millions of pounds to be spent on building on the foundation of successes students have already made in recent years. Proposed specialisms of science and technology with Information Communication Technology will act as the dynamic engine of curriculum change, providing each student with the opportunity to learn, successfully drawing on the expertise of the sponsors and partners.
The academy will work in partnership with partner primary schools, other secondary schools in the area and post-16 providers, including Aylesbury College and Bucks New University.
It will eventually relocate to a multi-million pound state-of-the-art building in the new Berryfields development.
Leslie Stephen, director, Oxford Diocesan Board, said: "We have been impressed by the level of support we have received from the wide range of stakeholders, from governors and staff to parents and students."
Marion Clayton, Bucks CC cabinet member achievement and learning, said: "I am confident the Academy will enhance the educational opportunities available to the young people of this area and will also make a significant contribution to the whole community."
