AN UNAUTHORISED website with an address which bears the name of Aylesbury Vale District Council is to be shut down after a regulator found it to be 'abusive.'
The council took action after it discovered that American firm Digital Assets Inc had registered the internet domain name 'aylesburyvaledistrictcouncil.co.uk' and was using it for a website directory for commercial organisations offering local authority-related services- for example, the section headed Planning Permission contains a link to the sites of planning consultants and architects.

AVDC- which operates its own website at aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk- feared that residents may use the site believing it to be run by the council, and that their reputation could be tarnished as a result.

It has now won a ruling from the UK's internet domain name resolution service, Nominet, who labelled the registration as 'abusive.'

Alan Evans, head of IT at AVDC, said:"There was a real risk of somebody being misled by it."
