The amount of time drivers spend queuing to get through Aylesbury each day is set to double in the space of 20 years, a public inquiry has been told.
And chiefs at Bucks County Council have warned that this transport nightmare is a best-case scenario, which could be a lot worse if road improvement works do not go ahead.

Critics slammed planning chiefs for taking huge risks with Aylesbury's future at heated meetings over plans to build 10,000 new homes in the east.

Planning inspector Geoff Salter heard that serious question marks still remained over Aylesbury Vale District Council's core strategy, which proposes focusing development in the east by 2026.

Among the concerns raised were that roads would be unable to cope with the sudden influx of new residents, and that the sites currently under consideration would pose a huge flood risk.

On Thursday Mr Salter was told that Aylesbury urgently needed an Eastern Link Road, but critical developers say the need for the road has yet to be proved.

The county council claims the road, pictured on the map opposite, could save a staggering 7,000 hours in queues each day, and would lead to a 10 per cent drop in journey times as Aylesbury's population rockets.

Among the groups in favour of an Eastern Link Road is Broughton with Bierton Parish Council, which says it is needed regardless of whether housing focuses in the east.

For a special report on the planning inquiry, see this week's Bucks Herald, on sale now.

Erm...Hello. Isn't this something that many of us have been saying on these pages for how long now?

If the money had been spent on the ringroad when it was proposed back in the early 80s they could have seriously reduced the amount of traffic crippling our small roads.
OK, so it might have cost a few hundred million back then BUT the long-term savings would have been tenfold - local roads wouldn't now look like the surface of the moon, local journey times would be greatly reduced, Aylesbury could be serious about being a cycle demo town, exchange street and Friarage road could be proper shared space (easier to do when you only have one or two cars to cope with) and the amount of business that would have been attracted to the area would have put us on a par with MK.

However, a ring road would need to be connected to other link roads around Aylesbury, in order to form a ring.

The present plans for an Eastern link road show that the southern end of it is on land that is not under developer control, making the funding of a complete road unlikely.

In addition the proposed road does not link with anything. It grinds to a halt between Bierton and Wingrave, giving drivers the option of either going through Bierton into Aylesbury or out towards Leighton Buzzard.

It does not link with the proposed Northern Link road (which by the way also has a whole section on land that is not under developer control and is therefore also unlikely to be built in it's entirity)

All it is, is a bigger version of Burcott Lane and Stocklake, in terms of what it delivers to the local motorist.

Also, AVDC during the enquiry, have failed to acknowledge that the roads need to be in place BEFORE the houses, along with other important infrastructure.

They are attempting to use developer "contibutions" to fund a road and infrastructure network that Bucks County Council and AVDC have long neglected for the people of Aylesbury. I wonder, just how many of the Tory councillors who run these "mal" adminsitrations actually live in the town of Aylesbury.

Yes, it seems crazy to have the A41 AC bypass terminate at a roundabout & force motorists to drive a mile towards town to pick up the planned roads.
But just imagine what Aylesbury would be like now if someone with foresight had built a decent road system around the town.
Just as MK has flourished, so would Aylesbury.
You ask how many Tory councillors live in Aylesbury - well in the recent story regarding Shakespeare's 24karat gold wheels, it says he hit potholes in Beaconsfield on his way home.
So the leader of the council doesn't live anywhere near Aylesbury - hence why he is so happy to run it down. I suspect most of the decision makers live many, many miles away & only come here if they really, really have to.
