26,000 new homes plans could be slashed in half

The number of new homes set to go up in the Vale could be dramatically slashed in half, new documents have revealed.

On Wednesday, district councillors will decide whether its core strategy - which mapped out how 26,890 new homes would go up by 2012 - should be scrapped.

Instead, officers at AVDC have suggested that only 12,700 homes are needed - with 8,000 already in the pipeline, through developments like Berryfields.

A report drawn up ahead of the crunch meeting states: "Our initial work on assessing the district's own 'natural need' (over and above the 8,000 in the 'planning pipeline'), indicates a figure in the region of 4,700 homes may be required up to 2026 over the whole of the district."

Do you think that 12,700 is an appropriate figure, or is the Vale's housing need too great to cut the figures in half? Let us know what you think by leaving comments below.
