Turn back the clock and have a great time

SLIP on those leg warmers, dig out the pedal pushers and get looking for that two-tone suit because on Saturday night you need to prepare to party like you did back in the ’80s.

The fundraiser, which will be held at the Court Theatre in Tring to raise money for the fabulous not-for-profit arts venue, is the brainchild of Donna Wright.

Inspired by the success – not to mention the great music of last year’s Our House, the Madness Musical – Donna Wright, the Court’s fundraising director, has put together a party to top all others.

With a playlist consisting entirely of number one hits from the decade that saw the launch of MTV, Live Aid, and the emergence of pop and dance music, get ready to reminisce with Abba, Olivia Newton-John, Culture Club, John Lennon and many more.

There are two DJs for the night – Tring born and bred hairdresser Wayne MacLaughlin AKA MC Mac, and JJ Stringer, AKA Jockey on a String, who is also from Tring.

Luke Swaffield – the Swaff – who grew up in the town but is now based in London is returning to do all the light and sound. No mean feat when you’ve got three projectors going.

Yes – projected around the theatre will be all those old ’80s adverts, Charles and Di’s wedding, Lady Thatcher coming to power and, of course, the opening scene from Dallas.

Professional photographer George Reddell will be operating a photo booth and for just £1, which will go straight into the theatre’s funds, party-goers can borrow some ’80s props, pose for a picture, and than have that image beamed onto the projector.

And if you were once a whizz on the Rubik’s Cube see if you’ve still got the knack. There’ll be one strategically placed on every table.

The licensed bar will also be operating as normal so no need to smuggle in the Thunderbird wine – or was that just me? Snacks will be available too.

Dressing up is not obligatory but very much encouraged and anyone who would like to send in a picture of their ’80s selves or a song request can email backtothe80s@gmx.com.

Organiser Donna Wright says: “I’m really looking forward to the event. It will be fantastic to travel back in time and hear the old music and watch the TV of the era.

“We’ve not tried an event of this type at the theatre before but it seems to have been very well received so it may be that this type of evening will become a regular fixture.”

The Court Theatre’s ‘80s Party is on Saturday, February 11 from 8pm to 11.30pm.

Call the box office on 07543 560478 for tickets or go online at www.courttheatre.co.uk.
