Neil Simon classic at Watford Palace Theatre
Lost In Yonkers
Neil Simon’s rarely performed Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Lost In Yonkers, opens the autumn season at Watford Palace Theatre on September 13.
Lost in Yonkers was described by Frank Rich in the New York Times as Simon’s “most honest play.”. This production, directed by Derek Bond, is from the team behind the recently acclaimed five-star London musical Floyd Collins.
It’s the summer of 1942 and life has turned upside down for teenage brothers Jay and Arty Kurnitz. Their mother has died of cancer and, with hospital bills still to pay, their father is in debt. He’s out on the road as a salesman, leaving the boys with their steely grandmother in an apartment above her Yonkers candy store.
Only childlike Aunt Bella offers them any warmth, and when Uncle Louie unexpectedly comes to stay – with a gun in his pocket and strange men asking questions – things go from bad to worse...
Neil Simon is a multi-award winning playwright and screenwriter, considered one of the finest writers of comedy in American literary history. His credits include; The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park, Sweet Charity and The Goodbye Girl. Lost in Yonkers premiered in New York in 1991, in a production that won the Pulitzer Prize as well as the Tony Award for Best Play.
Yonkers runs until October 6. For tickets call the box office 01923 225671 or go online www.watfordpalacetheatre.co.uk
