Spirit Of Tring festival returns

More than 2,500 tickets have so far been sold for the Spirit Of Tring festival, which returns on Friday after being postponed over the Jubilee Weekend.

The revised line up for the two-day event features music celebrating all 60 years of Her Majesty’s reign tonight (Friday) and a proms-style extravaganza on Saturday.

The festival was moved from June to September because of poor ticket sales, and organisers say they will decide in the coming weeks whether it will revert back to its usual date next year.

Festival spokeswoman Ella King said: “The main thing was the competition, there was so much going on over the Jubilee weekend. But now it is after the Olympics and Jubilee and we thought it is a nice way to round-off the summer.”

In the run up to this weekend organsiers encouraged festival supporters to spread the word about it by using social media – offering the chance to win prizes for those who forwarded Tweets or Facebook messages.

The marketing strategy has worked according to Ms King, 23, who said: “This year there are a lot of new people that are coming who haven’t been before. It’s really exciting.”

Both Friday and Saturday’s headline shows feature a full orchestra and end with a firework finale.

On Saturday there will also be a fly-by from a Spitfire which has been choreographed with music.

The festival costs roughly £150,000 to stage and proceeds from the not-for-profit event are donated to schools and sports clubs in the area.

The change of date means the venue’s traditional home of Tring Athletic football club can no longer host the festival, which has been moved to the nearby Pendley Manor activity meadow instead.
