Snapper Steve is Bucks Herald's first photographer of the year

Soaring against the velveteen night sky, Aylesbury's Bourg Walk stretches between the town's past and hopes for a shining future.

Taken by Steve Foster, owner of KDI Kitchens for 13 years, it was the image that secured its creator's position as the first ever Bucks Herald/Specsavers Photographer of the Year.

It was a fiercely fought competition in which hundreds of diverse entries were narrowed down to a shortlist of only 10.

The final three were announced at Specsavers, in High Street, on

Friday.

Amazingly, Steve has been taking pictures for only two years and his winning image was captured during his first ever night shoot – with his instruction manual propped by his side.

Steve won a top-of-the-range Pentax digital K200D camera.

Second prize went to Roger Bennion, of Aylesbury, with his stunning image of the sunset over Watermead. He was presented with a Pentax Optio P70 compact camera.

Third was Les Oliver, of Wing, who entered an atmospheric picture of the village's All Saints Church.

His prize was a pair of Specsavers designer glasses.

The remaining seven people who made the shortlist were all presented with free eye test vouchers.

Bucks Herald editor Ellen Campbell said: "The standard of entries was extremely high and it was a tough job to narrow the pictures down to the top ten, let alone the final three. However, Steve was a very worthy winner.
