Haddenham Players investigating murder

Members of Haddenham Players, Haddenham Museum Trust and villagers are to recount the notorious story of the murder of William Edden, of Thame, at Haddenham Fields in 1828.

The play, researched by Alan Rose, Chairman of the Trustees of Haddenham Museum, and written by Margaret Watkins of Haddenham Players, will be presented at the Tithe Barn, Manor Farm, Haddenham on Thursday, Friday and Saturday July 2, 3 and 4 at 7.30 pm.

Alan Rose used accounts of the murder and trial in local and national newspapers of the time, including the Bucks Gazette and the Times newspaper in London.

He compiled an account of the complexities of the case, which culminated in the hanging of Solomon Sewell and Benjamin Tyler in Aylesbury's Market Square in March 1830.

With a cast of 35, Margaret Watkins has transformed this account into a compelling drama.

This will be a production with a difference. The first part of the play, showing William Edden's last day alive, has been filmed and will be shown on a big screen as a prelude to the main drama.

The hearings at the magistrates' court and the trial in the County Court will be presented on stage.

The whole performance will be filmed by Mike Stephens, a professional film maker, and a DVD produced for sale in Haddenham Museum.

Although the real trial ended in the conviction of the two accused, Haddenham Players' version could end very differently.

At each performance, the audience will act as jury and. after listening to some very conflicting evidence, will give its own verdict. Whatever the outcome, no Haddenham Players will face execution!

Tickets at 6 are now on sale at Blooming Fruity, Banks Parade, Haddenham or ring the Box Office on 01844 291275.
