Gallery is a showcase for work of local artists

AS part of Bucks Visual Arts 2007, Obsidian Art, the gallery in Stoke Mandeville, is playing host to an exciting show of new paintings by five well-known local artists.

They are, Diana Noel, Alan Kidd, Sally Timms, Sheila Niekirk and Malcolm Sparkes - accompanied by stunning glass by Ewa Wawrzyniak and work by selected members of the Buckinghamshire Pottery and Sculpture Society.

Featured in the exhibition are over 100 paintings and drawings including abstracts, landscape and figurative paintings and prints.

Alan Kidd is best known for his strong watercolour landscapes of Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns, which have a refreshing clean, contemporary feel, using texture, light and colour.

This show also features Alan's portraiture in both paint and sculpture, which he has been developing over the last 18 months.

Originally trained as a graphic designer, Sally Timms' work has developed and changed significantly over the last few years. The large abstract canvases featured in this show have a wonderful feeling of timelessness, which she has created by the build up of layers.

In contrast, Diana Noel and Malcolm Sparkes' work is, in the main, figurative. Diana's work has a lightness to it through which colour, texture and an energy of line are explored through an eclectic mix of subjects and materials.

Malcolm has produced a collection of stunningly detailed work beautifully rendered in oils, pencil and watercolour featuring still life and architectural studies with observations on reflections and shadows, light and shade.

Sheila Niekirk is exhibiting with Obsidian again this year following the success of last year's show.

Her paintings are executed in a variety of media and explore different aspects of landscape. She takes her inspiration from the British countryside and her travels abroad.

Obsidian is also delighted to be showing the beautiful glasswork of Ewa Wawrzyniak. Ewa's sand-cast sculptures are some of the best in the country, and her work on display in this exhibition also includes fused glass wall hangings and dishes.

Completing the wonderful variety is work by nine selected members of the Buckinghamshire Pottery and Sculpture Society, including beautiful hand-thrown and glazed functional pots and vases and stoneware garden planters.

This wonderful wide-ranging art exhibition is at Obsidian Art, at the Bucks Goat Centre, until Sunday.

Obsidian Art is open daily from 10 to 6pm on weekdays and 10am to 5pm at weekends. Entry is free and all work is for sale.
