THAT'S the view of today's correspondent.
Dear Editor,

I think the anti-grammar school brigade in Buckinghamshire are tiresome and flogging a dead horse - we've had them here for centuries and are proud of them; they are thriving academically, provide outreach for other schools and in this day and age, where most Aylesbury schools have other specialisms - they are part of a very embracing and creative system. There are many other counties which don't have them, so why do the anti-grammar school lot decide to move here and bring up their children in our schools? When you relocate, you need to bear this in mind - if you're from here originally, you can't complain! It's like going to Delhi and complaing about the local temples or visiting Rome and wanting to bulldoze the Coliseum in favour of a chrome and pyrex dome - ludicrous!!

Sally Armstrong (who didn't even go to a grammar school)

Do you agree with Sally?

UKIP Aylesbury,

Aylesbury Vale 06/04/2009 21:55:08
The Conservative plans to abandon grammar schools is "a travesty"

By abandoning grammar schools they are holding back the brightest children from poor backgrounds, to the detriment of the whole country.

It is gross hypocrisy for the Tories to kill off grammar schools when five members of the shadow cabinet went to grammar schools, as did eight government cabinet ministers.

Research has shown that children from poor backgrounds do particularly well at grammar school; we need more, not fewer.

UKIP believes passionately in giving every child a chance, rather than condemning so many to failure, based on the ability to pay either school fees or expensive property.

The problem many Bucks people have with the Grammar school system, is that places are not exclusivley for Bucks children. Does UKIP have a view on that?

Evidence shows that intake at other Secondary Modern schools includes a vastly higher number of pupils from lower income families. Vastly higher numbers of pupils for whom English is a second language. More pupils that are on or have been on the child protection register and various other socio-economically disadvantaged backgrouds.

I suspect that the members of the shadow cabinet (or millionaires row as they are affectionately known) and cabinet ministers that went to Grammar schools did not belong to any of the socio-economic groups mentioned above. Just a hunch!

Bright children will thrive with good teaching, regardless of whether the less advantaged members of society have been streamed out of their midst.
