Loss of historic market heritage would be a tragedy

THAT's the view of today's correspondent
Dear Sir

It seems typical of the powers that govern Aylesbury that anything of
intrinsic character or interest such as Aylesbury's medieval Tuesday
market can be axed with little or no regrets.

Millions can be squandered on a theatre, tons of sand imported for an Aylesbury-by-Sea day, months of inconvenience and expense on an unnecessary new prestige station road project; but an insignificant sum for a dozen or so market stalls is out of the question.

I have lived near Aylesbury for over 40 years and I suppose I should be
used to the brief shelf life of buildings in the area: the Civic Centre, the Maxwell Pool, the College to name but a few. What seems inevitable is that our town planners will never be satisfied until Aylesbury becomes a clone of every other run of the mill town up and down the country.

The tragedy is the loss of our historic market heritage.

Yours faithfully

V. Cahill (Mrs)

Helen White,

Mrs Cahill is so right. Aylesbury has always been described as a Market Town and a Market Town it should remain. Who wants to live in a bland copy of Insignificant Anywhere? The town needs to encourage more diversity in the market not force it out by mean and petty restrictions.
