STEVE Higgs says Aylesbury's heritage must be protected
Having picked up this weeks Bucks Herald i feel i must speak out in support of Roger King's proposal to protect the old police station. There is nothing left around the area of the roundabout which contains interest, being surrounded by the 'blue leanie', the 'Cattle Shed' cinema, and now the theatre(judging by its description in this weeks paper should it not be under the jurisdiction of the forestry commission?)

The Crown Court building is destined for the chop, whats next, the demolition of Pooley's Folly, The Old County Hall, the Lions in the Market Square or John Hampden's Statue?

Aylesbury has a rich history, encased in its buildings, which is being , demolished and brushed under the carpet, in favour of, dare i say it, buildings designed with 'vertical timber elements, abstracted trees...designed to reinforce the romantic associations of a walk through woodland'. And we thought we were getting a Theatre/rock music venue!

As for the name of the theatre, surely we could have come with a more exciting name, or included the name of one of our modern local heroes-such as Freda Roberts or John Otway? I am not sure if the two names have ever been included in the same sentence before, so i claim a 'first'!

I urge all who have a care about the history of this town to make themselves heard, and protect our heritage from these pompous people who obviously design buildings more in tune with their own ego than with the surrounding area.

If Roger decides to raise a petition here's one name to put on it!

Aylesbury it's up to you!

Steve, great sentiments which I back completely, but sadly you and I are 70 years to late.

Have a look at the historic photographs on Bucks CC's website and see what we have lost in the name of "progress". Shops, taverns, grand houses, poor houses, beautiful parks and gardens, even whole communities have disappeared under a sea of concrete and Pigeon's mess.

Aylesbury has been the victim of progressive/agressive Town Planners since the mid-1930's, and much of our rich history of a thriving market town has been lost to concrete and planners delight.

Recently we have lost the Ship, the old Electric Board, and soon ABC/Dayla will be lost to another influx of flats (quite why, when Grand Central and the Observatory haven't sold out is beyond me).

Morn Aylesbury, it's already too late.
