THAT's the question being asked by Geoff Sleight
I recently received a copy of Cycle Aylesbury, a magazine by Bucks County Council dedicated to the virtues of cycling. Val Letheren BCC Portfolio Holder for Transportation gives a glowing endorsement in the publication for us all to get on our bikes.

What I would like to know is does Val Letheren cycle everywhere to carry out her civic duties? Indeed do the staff of Bucks County Council cycle everywhere to carry our their duties?

And if so, why does the County Council reserve half of Friars Square car park exclusively for its staff to park their cars at no charge?

Kind regards,

Geoff Sleight

The County Council does have pool bikes available for staff use (complete with helmets and locks), and plenty of cycle parking.

Of course though, how practical it is to cycle to meetings in the great British weather (i.e. rain) or outlying offices is open to debate.

Cycling to a meeting in High Wycombe for example, would become an all day event. You couldn't even travel the large distance by train with a cycle (unless it was a folding bike) due to Chilten Railways strict cycle policy - all meetings would need to happen in a very small window during the middle of the day. Not very practical for a short meeting. Would Mr. Sleight be happy for staff to spend a whole day travelling to a single meeting, so long as it was "green"? Not a great use of officer time (or of course your tax money!).

Whilst it isn't practical to cycle to all meetings (some are near enough to walk to!!) I'm a member of BCC staff and like many of my colleagues I regularly use either my own bike or a pool bike to get to local meetings. For those meetings further afield myself and my team generally use public transport, unless we need to carry loads of stuff...

My daily commute to County Hall also involves a bike ride to the station and then taking my bike on the train - its not a folding bike. Outside of peak journeys into and out of London Chiltern railways have few restrictions on carrying bikes.

Its not about being a martyr to the "green travel" cause, but IS about horses for courses and using the most suitable way of travelling for each journey. Yes, the car park does have a lot of space for BCC staff - there's a lot of us and Bucks is a big county to get around! One thing is for sure though, we've got far higher numbers of staff walking, cycling or using public transport to get to work than most large employers!!

There are many staff using the multi-storey who do use their own cars to carry out their duties in and around Aylesbury - but I believe there are many more who do not need a car for their job yet are allowed to participate in the rental scheme because of their huge salary.
I note that all users of the council's side of the multi-storey must use their pass card to enter and exit the car park. I must assume, therefore, that someone, somewhere holds statistics for how often people are in and out of the car park.
Maybe if the free parking was limited to essential use4rs only we might see a huge decline in use of this monstrosity.

Whilst on the subject of the multi-storey, could the white 'stop/give way' lines be repainted? Often when I cycle past, some idiot wants to drive into the road before stopping, they assume they can pull out to the lumps of kerbstone (or similar) embedded partway out in the road & they have the cheek to mouth obsenities at you as you cycle past - generally, the bigger/more expensive the car, the more profane the language - obviously what is discussed in these high-powere, exec meetings?
