Correspondent Nicholas Sabine says he is disappointed with yesterday's letter to the editor
I am disappointed with Mr Perry's letter about Watermead. To call the town a 'disgrace' and 'sorry state' just because of a little bit of duck and swan excrement is absurd. I live in Watermead and walk my dog around the lakes each morning and Mr Perry is exaggerating when he says the place is like a sewage farm. Mr Perry suggests the Watermead residents should jetwash the area each day. He is more than welcome to do this if he has the necessary time and money, as many of us certainly don't have. What is more of a nuisance is the amount of rubbish, which is thrown into the lake by the centre of Watermead, most likely by visitors coming on a warm summers day to enjoy the views across the lake.

Nicholas Sabine

Do you agree with Mr Sabine or Mr Perry?

All I have to say to Mr Sabines comments is for people to go and have a look for yourself. I am sure most people will be disgusted like myself.

Both Mr.Perry and Mr.Sabine are correct. A slanging match is unnecessary. The Watermead Piazza is a disgrace, especially the stagnant fountain. People should take their rubbish away but unfortunately that is the way of this country at present. Witness Bill Bryson's documentary last week on the BBC. However, the bird mess is also a disgrace, no fault of the birds but you would have thought that the shopkeepers and proprietors of the pub and the parish council would get together and clear up occasionally. After all, it is in their commercial interest to want to attract visitors and keep them happy. Sadly, the "It's not my job" mentality prevails as usual.
