Big switch-off is a waste of time

OUR correspondent Mike Birch feels plans to switch off more than 1,700 street lights throughout Aylesbury Vale will not make 'one iota of difference' in saving the planet.
With reference to your story of 'The big switch-off' (April 30), I am not convinced that the turning off of over 1700 street lights will not increase accidents and vandalism.

I am, however, sure that the presumed reduction in carbon emissions will, on the global scale, make not one iota of difference in saving the planet. To help achieve this the United States, Russia and China need to address their policies on creating pollution on such a massive scale.

My council tax bill this year is £2082 of which £12470 - or 75 per cent - is attributable to Bucks County Council. For this I expect the basic amenity of street lighting to be provided.

I am curious about what Bucks County Council is going to do with the extra £100,000 from reduced energy bills. Perhaps repair the proliferation and ever-increasing numbers of dangerous potholes in the roads which go unrepaired.
I doubt it.
