In a letter to The Bucks Herald, Nicki said she is appalled by the plans.
As I parked in the disabled car park opposite Wilkinsons (Anchor Lane/ Britannia Street), I was appalled to find that AVDC have applied to put public toilets in the car park at the expense of some of the disabled parking spaces.
There are only nine spaces to begin with and these are nearly always full! Disabled parking spaces have already been taken away from the High Street and other parts of the town and I am shocked that they want to take away even more. It's very difficult to find a disabled parking space in the town centre as it is.
No one is disputing the need for public toilets, but there are plenty of other places for them to go, without losing disabled parking. There is a large expanse of paving opposite outside Wilkinsons, which is just as suitable, and why not replace them in Kingsbury - which is where they were removed from in the first place!
It seems disabled people are discriminated against as the council will not be providing any replacement parking spaces. Their argument is that there are disabled spaces in Upper Hundreds car park, but they seem to have forgotten the fact that it is an uphill walk into town and therefore totally unsuitable for disabled people! It's ironic that to qualify for a blue badge, one must have a "disability which makes walking very difficult," yet the Upper Hundreds car park is located further from the main shopping areas. Plus of course this location is a pretty poor position for any new public toilets, as they would be hidden away from the High Street.
This is very poor planning from AVDC and I hope this application is refused, so that a better location for the public toilets can be found.
