(WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17) THE Waddesdon Jazz Festival will take place at the Five Arrows Hotel in Waddesdon over the August Bank Holiday weekend for the sixth year in a row.
Each of the four nights will host a well-known jazz act, some that have become firm favourites over the time the event has been held.
The four-day event will kick-off on Friday August 26 at 7.30pm with Humphrey Lyttelton and his Band who are coming back to Waddesdon and promise another dazzling performance.
Humphrey formed his first jazz band in 1948 after spending a year with George Webb's Dixielanders, a band which pioneered New Orleans style jazz in the UK.
Before long, Humphrey Lyttlelton and his band, with Wally Fawkes on clarinet, soon became the leading traditional jazz band in Britain with a high reputation gained in Europe after many tours of the continent.
The evening will cost £45, which includes a two-course buffet supper.
And on Saturday August 27 at 7.30pm Neville Skelly & His Swing Orchestra will perform for the first time at the Five Arrows Hotel.
The orchestra promises to bring a mix of the best in big band swing. His repertoire includes fresh renditions of timeless classics including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Miller and Cole Porter.
Neville Skelly set his heart on becoming a singer when, at an early age he fell in love with the music of the big bands and the performances of the great song stylists.
He served his apprenticeship singing in bars and clubs and with some of the best swing bands on both sides of the Atlantic.
Now, with his own orchestra, he is at the forefront of a new generation of young performers credited with widening the music's appeal and attracting new listeners.
He said he was equally at home with the work of modern talent as with that of songwriters such as Hoagy Carmichael, Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer.
Skelly has been described as 'Sinatra for a new generation', and his appearance as the Waddesdon Jazz Festival brings a delightful reminder of the great thirties and forties swing band era. The black-tie evening, which includes a three-course set dinner, costs £55.
Stacey Kent is a 31-year-old New Yorker who has a firm following in the UK and is fast building a reputation as one of the fastest rising jazz stars in her home country.
It was while travelling through Europe after college that Kent met several musicians who were travelling to London to audition for a jazz course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
On a whim she auditioned too and was accepted despite her lack of formal training.
Her love of jazz grew from there.
Tickets have sold out to Stacey Kent and her Musicians performance on Sunday August 28, although tickets are available for the Monday night performance with a Brazilian touch. Tickets costs £45, which includes a two course buffet supper.
